Minor Major Seven

There is a chord, a series of notes played simultaneously, that conjures mystery and adventure. That chord is the minor major seventh chord. It was in popular use in the 1960's when many adventure and spy programs, or movies, used it at a bumper of ending to their themes.

Popular examples include: James Bond Theme and the Spider-Man Theme.

When I first learned of this chord my brain almost melted. It seems wrong somehow. It is derived from a minor mode and therefore has a distinct feeling and natural instability. When you add a 9th degree to the top of the chord, as the Spider-Man theme does you get magic.

Spiderman Theme

That chord was the inspiration behind the Red Hornet Theme:

"The pentathletes are the perfect athletes, because in their bodies are both strength and speed."

Aristotle

I stumbled across the pentathlon (the coolest sport you've never heard of) while doing research for my book: From Prussia With Love. I wanted my hero (the Red Hornet) to be an excellent athlete in prime physical condition and to be good with a pistol. I knew of the biathlon but I wanted something that would use a pistol not a rifle. That's when I found the pentathlon. As I learned more about it I became fascinated. What a bizarre, yet awesome, contest. It is dangerous, requires tremendous skill and endurance, and is the ultimate test for the best all around warrior:

Fencing, Swimming, Riding, Running and Shooting.
